Video Contest: I Am What I Learn

In an effort to get students more engaged in their education, President Barack Obama and Education Secretary Arne Duncan have announced a new video contest, asking students to "inspire" them with their stories.

The contest, called I Am What I Learn, is accepting entries from middle school, high school, and college students ages 13 and older.

Students can submit videos up to two minutes long, and entries must be received by Nov. 2.

You can find all the details, along with the contest rules, over on the I Am What I Learn website.

Josh Shipp has a pretty amazing story and really great advice on, well --just about everything! MTV calls "Hey! Josh" the Dear Abby for teens.

So go ahead, ask him a question, connect on MySpace or learn how to create a budget. He can even teach you some crazy good laundry management skills or how to get along better with your parents.

Yep, he's cool like that.

Q: “Hey Josh, My relationship with my parents is awful. What can I do about it?”

I get this question a lot. It’s tough because your parents are supposed to be like these child-rearing wizards, right? But sometimes they aren’t. Nobody is perfect. So no parent is perfect.

Your relationship with your parents will be the longest lasting relationship in your life. You can deal with the problems now, or the problems will deal with you later. And remember, the relationship doesn’t have to be perfect but it can always be better.

Digital History: World War II & Bataan Death March

Medals, newspaper clippings, video, letters, and the story of an American flag created by Clarance Bramley, a survivor of the Bataan Death March—all this and more can be found in an online exhibit, “Remembering World War II: Pearl Harbor and Beyond.”

The online collection features items and stories selected from a collection of World War II materials housed at the Lee Library at Brigham Young University.

Good news!

We know you are all wondering when the heck we are going to announce the dates for the ylc '07 youth leadership conference!

Well, I can tell you that we will be holding the 2007 San Diego Youth Leadership Conference at the USMC Base at Camp Pendleton. The dates are still being finalized, but we hope to make an announcement here on ylc buzz in the next week. So stay tuned!

In the meanwhile, you can check out photos from our past conferences over on our YLC Flickr page. While you're there, why not sign up (it's free!) and share some of your ylc '06 photos?!

Get Involved: Million Voices for Darfur

Student groups all over the country are getting involved and informed about what's going on in Darfur. This weekend there are rallies happening all over the country as part of the million voices for darfur campaign

Here are some ways to get involved and informed:

The U.S. Holocaust Museum has put together several excellent resources, including:
1.) Six Things you can do to help prevent genocide
2.) Call to Action: Students Take Action for Darfur
3.) Voices on Genocide Prevention podcasts.

Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone is an excellent series of in-depth news reports from regions entrenched in armed conflict. Last November, he filed a series of reports (via text, video, and photos) from Darfur.

YLC+Slide+Flickr Mash-Up

Slide is a nifty little photo scrolling program that allows you to publish image-based content (via RSS or iPhoto 6) directly to a Slide Player.

The great thing about Slide is that it knows how to play nice with other kids in the Web 2.0 sandbox. This means you can use Slide to create your own mash-up with other web-based services like Flickr or YackPack. Or even the "dreaded" MySpace (shhh, it's our secret).

For example, I created a Slide Show using photo's tagged "mowwylc" from Flickr. You can check it out on the community page over on the web site.

Slide even provides you with the HTML snippet so you can embed your Slide Show into your web site or blog. Or you can subscribe to the class Slide feed and view it on your desktop Slide Player.

Pretty slick, eh?

So bring your camera to ylc '06 and share your photos in the YLC Flickr group!

The Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary: This year marks the 300th anniversary, or tercentenary, of Benjamin Franklin's birth. In honor of the founding father, printer, inventor, and irrepressible raconteur, the U.S. Congress established a commission to educate we publick about Franklin's well-lived life.

This beautifully crafted online exhibit is one result. Follow Franklin from his disobedient Boston beginnings, to his role in shaping the U.S. Constitution and his tenure as an elder statesman.

Along the way, dip into sections that detail what Franklin thought of self-improvement, how he created a colonial media empire, and the ultimate stance he took on slavery. YackPack: Click, Talk, Connect

YackPack is a new social software product that allows users to record and send audio messages to friends inside privately formed groups. YackPack helps people stay connected, even though they may be separated by geography.

The easy-to-use interface will allow you to jump in and begin sending audio messages, without struggling to figure out how to use the technology. All you do is plug in your microphone and talk! This is a great way for you to keep in touch with family and friends.

Anyone with a parent, sibling, or friend fighting in Afganistan or Iraq should really give YackPack a try. Many soldiers have access to email, but making phone calls is a bit more difficult. Why not try YackPack? That way you can, through regular email, hear each other's voices.

The September Project is a grassroots effort to encourage public events on freedom, democracy, and citizenship in libraries on or around September 11. September Project events are activitiesof reflection, discussion, and dialogue about the meaning of freedom, the role of information in promoting active citizenship, and the importance of literacy in making sense of the world around us.

Events take place on September 11, on the weekend of September 11, or throughout the month of September. In other words, whenever it works best for your library and community. Libraries around the world are collaborating with organizations to host public and campus events, such as: displays about human rights and historical documents; talks and performances about freedom and cultural difference; and film screenings about issues that matter. Casual dress that is tasteful (e.g. no tank tops or short shorts) (warm summer days) (Bermuda style shorts are permissible).
Sweater or jacket for air-conditioned classrooms and cool evenings.

American Red Cross World War II Scrapbook: "You may have known that the Red Cross served the troops during World War II by handing out donuts and coffee, setting up evacuation tents, and hosting dances. But did you think of their talented operatives as playing an accordion or manning a cinemobile?

This touching exhibit commemorates the war experiences of the Red Cross' recreation staff through the memorabilia of several of its workers. "I think it is time to send post cards, get well cards, holiday cards, thinking of you cards to our wounded in Germany. It has been a while since anyone has expressed interest in these brave soldiers. I do not want them to feel forgotten....the hospital is a lonely place to be especially being so far from friends and family."

Want to send a care package to a soldier in harm's way, but have no idea of what to send, who to send it to, or how to send it?

Sergeant Brian Horn from LaPlata, Maryland, an Army Infantry Soldier with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in the Kirkuk area of Iraq started the idea of AnySoldier to help care for his soldiers. He agreed to distribute packages that came to him with "Attn: Any Soldier" in his address to the soldiers who are not getting mail.

Brian is no longer in Iraq, but AnySoldier.US continues with your supportstarted by the parents of a soldier stationed in Iraq, provides 'wish lists' for units stationed in Iraq, Afganistan and throughout the Middle East. This is a great way to help boost our soldiers morale and show them that we appreciate their service.

A Capitol Fourth: A National Celebration

From the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, A CAPITOL FOURTH kicks off a brilliant evening of musical entertainment topped by a dazzling display of fireworks over the Washington monument. America's premier holiday event stars Nashville superstars Vince Gill and Amy Grant, along with other stellar guest artists, in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of premier pops conductor Erich Kunzel. The program includes traditional favorites '1812 Overture' with live cannons and John Philip Sousa's 'Stars and Stripes Forever.'

Books For Soldiers

Books For Soldiers is a soldier support site that ships books, DVDs and supplies to deployed soliders and soldiers in VA hospitals, via our large volunteer network.

If you have old, but usuable paperback books sitting around, collecting dust, why not send them to a solider for a big morale boost?

Many of our volunteers have received email and letters from the soldiers they have adopted.

From actors to musicians, comedians to athletes, Rock the Vote harnesses cutting-edge trends and pop culture to make political participation cool.

Rock the Vote mobilizes young people to create positive social and political change in their lives and communities. The goal of Rock the Vote’s media campaigns and street team activities is to increase youth voter turnout. Rock the Vote coordinates voter registration drives, get-out-the-vote events, and voter education efforts, all with the intention of ensuring that young people take advantage of their right to vote.
